ACCC Cardiff: A New Chapter in Grid Innovation

The ACCC Cardiff (Aluminium Conductor Composite Core) is a new variation of overhead line conductor, designed specifically to support modern electricity distribution networks. As a Cardiff-based, Ofgem-licensed independent infrastructure company, we were proud to lead the type testing and deployment of this technology earning the right to name it.

Built for Welsh Conditions. Designed for the Future. The ACCC Cardiff conductor has been engineered to withstand challenging Welsh weather conditions while delivering higher capacity and reliable long-term performance. It will be deployed on L7c pylons — structures that stand approximately 27 metres tall and 5 metres wide. These are around half the size of a typical 400kV transmission tower, helping to significantly reduce visual impact. By combining advanced conductor technology with smaller pylon infrastructure, ACCC Cardiff can double the capacity of smaller pylons. This enables us to modernise and strengthen critical grid infrastructure while minimising landscape impact.

Meeting Growing Energy Demand. Electricity demand in Wales is projected to triple by 2050. To support this growth — and to connect increasing volumes of renewable generation to homes and businesses — new and enhanced distribution networks are essential. ACCC Cardiff is part of that solution. It allows more power to be transmitted efficiently, safely and reliably using a more compact overhead line design.

A Recognised Naming Convention. The ACCC Cardiff follows established international naming conventions used for other conductor variants, including “Hamburg” and “Oslo”. Being the first developer to successfully type test and deploy this variation secured Green GEN Cymru the opportunity to formally designate the Cardiff variant.

Leadership Perspective

Steve Rowlands, Head of Construction at Green GEN Cymru, said: “We’re proud to have put Cardiff on the map as an engine of innovation in the energy sector. Wales has the ambition to generate growth, skills and jobs through this industry. We are motivated to support our nation’s energy future — and the capital embodies that spirit.

We are committed to deploying technologies designed for our landscape and our communities. The ACCC Cardiff allows us to carry far greater capacity on smaller, less visually intrusive pylons.

I’m delighted our application was successful and I look forward to seeing the ACCC Cardiff used on projects around the world.”

Stuart George, Chief Executive of Green GEN Cymru, added: “We are delighted to recognise Cardiff as a centre of expertise and innovation.

The ACCC Cardiff is just one example of how we are innovating in network technology. We are continually seeking opportunities to improve and to bring cutting-edge solutions to the industry.

Investing in vital infrastructure and advanced technologies is fundamental to achieving our ambition — harnessing innovation, driving economic growth, creating high-quality jobs and strengthening Wales’ energy security.”

Supporting Clean Energy Infrastructure

Welcoming the broader role of innovation in upgrading the electricity grid, UK Government Minister of State for Energy, Michael Shanks, said:

“We are upgrading an electricity grid system largely designed in the 1960s, so lower-cost clean energy can be transported to power homes and businesses.

Innovations that increase grid capacity can help us make the most of clean power generated in Wales and across Britain, and move us away from the volatility of fossil fuel markets.
