An update on our Towy Usk Grid Connection Project – March 2026

We know how important it is to keep you informed of project developments, so we wanted to share this latest project update with you as soon as possible.

Since the close of the consultation on 8 May 2024, we have been analysing feedback received from communities and other stakeholders, furthering our environmental and technical assessments in order to refine the route and design of the proposed Towy Usk Grid Connection Project. We are proposing changes to the proposed connection that seek to reduce visual impacts for nearby communities by moving sections of the proposed route into less prominent terrain and further from settlements, strengthen protection of key heritage and environmental assets, including ancient woodlands, and avoid flood zones and planned development. In addition, we are proposing on extending the underground section.

We are grateful for your engagement, and these proposed changes reflect what we’ve heard from you so far and our commitment to addressing the potential effects in the areas that matter most. We want to ensure you stay informed and involved as the project progresses. As the design continues to develop, further input will continue to guide the next stages.

Later this year, we will hold a third round of consultation in relation to the proposed changes to the route, during which we will be sharing detailed information on all route updates and providing you with the opportunity to meet the project team through public events and have your say on the proposed changes.

In the meantime, we are engaging with landowners about the proposed changes and preparing to complete further environmental and technical surveys across the proposed route. These surveys will give us a better understanding of the local environment, allowing us to reflect this in the ongoing development of our work.

We are developing a new 132kV electricity connection that will link the proposed Nant Mithil Energy Park in the Radnor Forest area in Powys to the proposed National Grid substation at Llandyfaelog in Carmarthenshire.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our two rounds of public consultation in Spring 2023 and Spring 2024. Your input is continuing to help us shape a project that works for the people who live, work, and spend time in the areas around our proposals. As a result of these contributions, as well as further assessments and feedback from technical stakeholders, we are proposing some changes to the Towy Usk Grid Connection.

The proposed changes include:

  • realigning the route into less prominent terrain near Aberedw Hill;
  • increasing the distance of the proposed connection from Llanwrda, Llandovery and Cwrt Henri; and
  • reducing potential impacts on ancient woodland, priority habitat, the River Towy flood zone and key heritage features.

Changes we are progressing also include repositioning the route to lessen effects near Cilmeri and Glan Irfon, extending the underground section near Llanarthney, and adjusting the proposed route alignment to reflect proposed development at Nantycaws.
