AN UPDATE ON OUR RHIWLAS PROJECT

We know how important it is to keep you informed of project developments, so we wanted to share this latest project update with you as soon as possible.

Proposed changes to the Rhiwlas route alignment

In response to feedback from our 2024 consultation, our targeted consultation on Section 1 earlier this year, and further assessments with technical stakeholders, we are proposing changes to the Rhiwlas project route. These changes would reduce the total number of wood poles needed, realign some sections to lessen impacts on agricultural activity, reduce interactions with ancient woodland and peat, and reduce potential impacts on some heritage, economic and residential assets.

Members of the local community have sent us valuable feedback and suggestions asking us to think carefully about effects on communities and landscape. We’re grateful for this engagement, and the proposed changes reflect what we’ve heard so far and our commitment to addressing the potential effects in the areas that matter most.

Later this year, we will hold our statutory consultation, during which we will be sharing detailed information on all route updates and providing you with the opportunity to meet the project team through public events and have your say on the proposed changes.

In the meantime, we are engaging with landowners about the proposed changes and preparing to complete further environmental and technical surveys across the project. These surveys will give us a better understanding of the local environment, allowing us to reflect this in the ongoing development of our work.

Our proposed updates to the Rhiwlas route

Our proposed updates to the Rhiwlas route

*You will note that two route options are currently being presented in the area north of Clatter and east of Llyn y Tarw. These options are being shown at this stage to allow us to take account of the ongoing consultation on the proposed Calon-y-Gwynt Energy Park being brought forward by Wind2 and to ensure that our assessment remains robust and properly informed. Only one route option would ultimately be taken forward for submission. To reach that decision, survey data is required across the relevant areas so that environmental, technical and land considerations can be assessed alongside any decisions made regarding turbine placements for the energy park before the preferred route is confirmed.

Proposed route changes

  • Realigning the route to minimise interactions with peat around Llyn y Tarw
  • Routing the alignment along field boundaries where possible to lessen impacts on agricultural activity
  • Reducing interactions on some heritage and residential assets.
