A Distribution Network Operator (DNO) is the regional company responsible for running the electricity network in your area.

An Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) is a private company that owns and operates electricity networks.

An Independent Connection Provider (ICP) is a company accredited under the National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS), to design and build new electricity networks — from cables to substations and connections. Their work must meet strict industry standards so that, once complete, the network can be adopted and maintained by either the DNO or the IDNO.

What is the difference between
a DNO and an IDNO?

You may have heard of DNOs (Distribution Network Operators) – they’re the regional companies responsible for the existing electricity infrastructure across the UK.

The key difference? IDNOs operate new networks, typically branching off the DNO network to serve specific developments or energy projects. While a DNO manages the existing grid in your area, an IDNO like Green GEN Cymru focuses on expanding access to clean energy by offering new, dedicated infrastructure.
