Proposed route changes
Following the feedback gathered in earlier consultations, as well as further assessments and feedback from technical stakeholders we’re proposing changes to the Towy Usk Grid Connection. While changes are proposed throughout the route, we have outlined the more significant proposed alterations in in detail below.
Section 2: Aberedw Hill to Llangammarch Wells
- Aberedw Hill
We’ve adjusted the route to place it in lower‑lying, less visible terrain, reducing its potential visual impact and setting impacts on Caer Einon Hillfort. The proposed route avoids restored ancient woodland near the B4567 and minimise interactions with other sensitive woodland areas.
- Cilmeri
To the south of Cilmeri, the proposed route has been redesigned to lessen potential effects on cultural heritage assets and to increase distance from Glan Irfon. North of the A483, the route has moved slightly south.
Section 4: Llandovery to Llandeilo
- Llandovery to Llanwrda
The proposed route would move the alignment further north, increasing its distance from the western side of Llandovery and passing to the north of Llanwrda. This redesign would remove any interaction with the River Towy flood zone south of Llanwrda and reduce potential impacts on the Towy Valley Registered Historic Landscape, the Afon Tywi SAC, and the setting of the Cwm‑bran scheduled monument. The updated route would also avoid ancient woodland at Ystrad and Nantyrhogfaen.
- Cwm Ifor
The proposed route has been re-positioned north of settlements Monordeilo and Cwmifor along the C1262, placing it in a less prominent location within the Towy Valley Registered Historic Landscape and minimising interactions with priority habitats.
Section 5: Llandeilo to Llandyfaelog
- Cwrt Henri
The route is proposed to run south of Cwrt Henri in parallel to the Llannon Road, increasing its distance from the community.
- Underground section at Llanarthney
The underground cable section through Llanarthney is proposed to be extended, and the points where the route transitions between overhead line and underground cable have been repositioned to minimise interaction with priority habitats and reduce visual effects.
- Nantycaws to Llandyfaelog
The proposed alignment has been amended to take account of proposed development at Nantycaws. The proposed route alterations also seek to minimise visual effects and impacts on priority habitats.
