Industry Collaboration Will Be Key to Delivering on Energy Ambitions

This week, I attended Connecting Projects to the Grid 2026, an event that brought together representatives from across the energy sector, including government, network operators, developers, environmental bodies and technical specialists.

While the agenda covered a wide range of topics, my biggest takeaway was not any single presentation or discussion. Instead, it was the collective recognition that delivering the UK’s energy ambitions will require unprecedented levels of collaboration, transparency and long-term thinking.

Across the sector, there is a clear understanding of the scale of the challenge ahead. Decarbonisation and electrification are no longer future ambitions; they are active programmes of work that are reshaping how energy infrastructure is planned, developed and delivered. The electricity network sits at the heart of this transformation, and ensuring it can support future demand will be critical to achieving wider net-zero objectives.

What was particularly encouraging was the willingness of organisations from very different backgrounds to engage openly about the challenges facing the industry. Whether representing government, network operators, developers or environmental interests, there was a shared recognition that progress depends on working together to overcome barriers and improve processes.

The importance of trust also featured strongly throughout the event. As the industry navigates significant change, transparency and clear communication will be essential. Stakeholders need confidence in the processes that underpin investment decisions, project development and network planning. Building and maintaining that confidence will be just as important as the technical solutions themselves.

The event also reinforced how interconnected the sector has become. Challenges affecting one part of the industry can quickly impact others, from project development and planning through to supply chains and delivery timelines. This highlights the importance of maintaining a whole-system perspective when considering future reforms and investment decisions.

As someone working in compliance and connections, it was particularly valuable to hear firsthand perspectives on the evolving challenges and opportunities surrounding grid access. Effective connections are fundamental to unlocking new energy projects, and the discussions reinforced the importance of close coordination between developers, network operators and other stakeholders to ensure capacity can be delivered where and when it is needed.

For me, and Green GEN Cymru as a business, participation in events such as these is an important opportunity to engage with industry colleagues, understand emerging challenges and contribute to conversations that will help shape the future energy landscape. While there is no shortage of complexity ahead, the commitment demonstrated by attendees left me optimistic that the sector is moving in the right direction.

The energy transition represents one of the most significant infrastructure challenges of our generation. Meeting that challenge will require ambition, innovation and continued collaboration across the industry. Events such as Connecting Projects to the Grid provide a valuable forum for those conversations, and I look forward to seeing how they continue to evolve in the years ahead.
