To respond to this challenge and meet Welsh Government’s target for 100% renewable electricity in Wales by 2035, we’re developing a stronger, more resilient renewable electricity network that is greatly needed in Wales – distributing clean energy.

Green GEN Cymru has received an Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) licence from Ofgem and will pay for the construction and maintenance of the new electricity distribution network. While renewable energy providers will pay an annual charge for using the distribution network.
We believe that as a Welsh based energy business, we are uniquely placed to work with Welsh communities, landowners, stakeholders, and suppliers to create economic and community benefits for Wales.
Our proposed network would allow direct connection of community and other generation projects, while reducing pressure on the existing electricity grid, supporting energy resilience and enabling the rollout of green heating and electric vehicles.
With the world aiming for net zero carbon emissions by 2050, much ink is spilt on wind turbines, batteries and electric cars, but none of them will work without a decent system of cables and transformers carrying current to our homes and businesses.

Our proposed network would allow direct connection of community and other renewable projects, while reducing pressure on the existing electricity grid, supporting energy resilience, enabling clean heating and the roll out of electric vehicles across Wales.
There will be no public funds used. As an Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO), Green GEN Cymru will pay for the design, construction and maintenance of the new 132kV (132,000- volt) electricity distribution network – needed to connect new Welsh renewable energy projects to the electricity transmission network, helping to get clean energy to homes and businesses across Wales and beyond.
Green GEN Cymru will enable generation to be connected to the electricity network and to the homes and businesses where we use it. Once up and running, wind generation is one of the cheapest forms of electricity generation, renewable energy made in Wales will reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels and contribute to energy independence.
We’re creating a sustainable energy system for everyone living in Wales.

Our green grid network can provide a regional network solution for South and Mid Wales and could open potential for business investment in the area, supporting the creation of jobs and skills, and the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy for heating homes and electric vehicles.
By connecting wind farm projects from Bute Energy, the communities closest to our grid lines are also eligible to apply to Bute Energy’s unique Community Benefit Fund. Worth millions of pounds per year, this money will be available to provide financial support for initiatives that improve the quality of life for community members, help secure clean energy independence, foster engagement, and address social and economic concerns – a unique approach in Britain.
